Any Advice for the Upper Division Writing Exam?

The writing exam is coming on the 20th. It would be good to hear tips on how to prepare for the exam.

I.e What could I do to practice? What sort of things should I keep in mind? What is a good way to make the exam feel easier?

What experiences do others have, and how did they pass?

**Please assume that the LRC workshops are already full

indent paragraphs
write 5 paragraphs
make sure to have an intro and a conclusion
basically show them you can write a basic essay

There's no real way to prepare except by experience with writing essays. It's just your basic five paragraph essay where you are proving a claim.

Stay calm and do an outline before you start writing to stay on track with what you are writing about. Also, save at least 10-15 mins at the end to review and edit any mistakes.

Read the prompt, make sure you have an intro, body, and conclusion. Your body should be composed of three points where you either agree or disagree with the story that they will provide. Make sure to use the quantitative data provided, and that you quote here and there.

Read the sample essays and just copy that format.

Make sure to use the data/tables provided. They want you to show your "number sense" as well.

One of the the most important things is to use your imagination. Be creative with it. Write your essay as if it's something that is actually interesting to you and it will be easy.

I don't mean to be a dick, but this is terrible advice. Oftentimes trying to be creative in a rigid, structured essay like the UDWPE means you go off the rails and appear to lack basic essay writing abilities. Stick to the format. Intro with thesis, topic #1, topic #2, topic #3, conclusion that ties everything together. Throw in a personal anecdote or two if appropriate for your essay. If you can demonstrate you know how to write a simple 5-paragraph essay, you'll pass. That's all that's required.
